Pedestrians walk past Brent's Books & Cards an independent bookstore in downtown Chicago Wednesday Sept. 27 2006. Owner Adam Brent is closing the store and will re-open as a discount book store. His experience is shared by scores of independent bookstores around the nation that have been knocked out of business by huge chains like Borders and Barnes & Noble massive retailers like Wal-Mart and most recently Internet sites like Amazon.com.
